Product dimensions vary in depthAlthough I have painted regularly since childhood, my art hit a rough patch when I moved to Ellis county, Texas, 15 years ago. I had a larger place and more horses than ever to care for, plus I taught numerous college classes. I painted only a half dozen works a year and they spent a long time on the easel before being finished. When I stopped teaching college I began painting in earnest again. I painted over 100 small canvases to get the flow going. These small paintings are from that group. They are “every idea” I ever had when I didn’t have time to paint, well almost every idea. I quickly discovered I will never finish every idea. My early career as a designer left me with the desire to paint organic patterns inspired by the nature I see daily. There are infinite variations on that theme in my work. I’m especially drawn to the light changing throughout the day and the sunrise and sunset as seen through the trees and plants that edge my property. I call the light spots “portals,” and try to impart some mystery of the unseen beyond. My inspirations come from the American modernists such as the Steiglitz gallery group: Marin, Burchfield, Dove, O’Keeffe: and the regionalists such as Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton. Contemporary painters I look to include Lois Dodd and Richard Diebenkorn.
